Sylvain Lefebvre was one of those players who you could make a good argument for making a defensive defenseman award (as opposed to the Norris Trophy which is for the best offensive defenseman). During his time in the NHL few players would contest him for that trophy and he would surely be a finalist if not the winner of it each and every year.
Dependable, reliable, and safe were key words in describing his play. His game was always defense first and his stats always showed that. This basic, but very effective approach interested me a lot in him. Everyone has boundaries, but Lefebvre played right up to the corners of his and was extremely successful both individually and as a team player. His physical play in front of the net deterred many as he brought his hard nosed style to the rink every night. Lefebvre did so many of the little things well from patrolling the net to being a mainstay on the first penalty killer defensive pair wherever he played. To date, I have not been fortunate enough to meet Lefebvre, but he is an assistant coach and that could mean a special meeting with him at a game or practice. CAREER NHL STATS (1989-2003)

2000-2001 NEW YORK RANGERS HOME WHITE SET 2
GAME USE & ABUSE: The left sleeve features a trio of board burns who could not stand the heat and are now holes. A pair of light marks can be seen in the white above the stripes as well. The right sleeve features a nice repair in the red stripe, one up by the shoulder, and both sleeves feature custom shortened forearms. On the front of the jersey, five to seven marks depending on how you count and include marks as "continual" or not can be seen below the "S" in "RANGERS". The jersey itself has been dry cleaned thus making these marks faint. On the right shoulder by the 9/11 patch there is board burn/repair combo that shows up. Around the back, with the exception of a faint mark to the left of the number two, it appears clean.

2002-2003 NEW YORK RANGERS BLUE ALTERNATE SET 1
GAME USE & ABUSE: The use on this jersey is light. Starting on the left sleeve, there are five board burns with all being light except for one almost the size of a dime in the red forearm. There is some light fraying to the sleeve numbers rounding out the wear on this arm. On the right sleeve, a trio of board burns with one losing the battle with heat and becoming an unrepaired hole. A single mark can be seen on the lower white stripe. Both arms have customizations in which the sleeve just below the elbow is sewn in on itself becoming a taper. The front of the jersey is dark and might hide some wear, but there is nothing to see.

Using hockeyreference.com, MeiGray's population report, and deductive reasoning, Lefebvre only wore this jersey for four games:
October 19th vs Nashville Predators November 23rd vs New York Islanders December 1st vs Tampa Bay Lightning December 6th vs Buffalo Sabres This would also be one of the last jerseys Lefebvre would wear in the NHL. |
