Heart, desire and determination have always been the cornerstone of Muller's game. When he skated down the ice he always seemed to be pushing himself like it was a race to get icing waved off. Not the most gifted with moves, he really worked the best in corners where he was as good with his stick as he was with his feet. He would muck in the corners whether it was digging for the puck or plowing through someone and then look to pass to an open teammate.
Muller always seemed to hustle and be in the right spot without the puck for a pass as well. His game was always more assist laden, but when he was scoring it was usually within a 15 foot radius of the net. There Muller would shoot or set-up shop to screen the goalie. He would plant himself there and dare the defense to push him out of the way only to circle back and dig in harder. When tempers got heated Muller never backed down. He would fight and although he did not always win the fights, he was more than a willing combatant. He checked hard, finished his checks and played with 'heart'. No one ever accused him of not leading the way. When Muller was not in the corners he was playing great two-way hockey. The defensive skills he had probably extended his NHL career for years especially in the twilight days of Dallas. On the faceoff, he wasn't quick, but oh was he ever slick. If he did not win the faceoff cleanly or know he could not, that opposing center would be tied up. Thinking one or two steps ahead seemed to be another trick up his sleeve. "Captain Kirk" was one of my first real heroes I watched play. Muller led by example on the ice and off and I hope to someday meet him and tell him what a treat it was to watch him. 1987-1988 NEW JERSEY DEVILS RED ROAD SET 1
GAME USE & ABUSE: Great use on the jersey with 30+ repairs total! It all starts on the left arm with seven stick marks with the most prominent on the #9. Seven repairs and three unrepaired holes also show-off this great jersey. The right arm features eight stick marks, eleven great repairs running up and down the whole arm and to top it all off, one unrepaired hole. On the front of the jersey you can see about 20 stick marks of varying lengths, but all on the crest or below. The best mark is on the upper right stripe to the right of the crest. Four unrepaired holes can also be seen on the jersey in the lower third. The outline of the "C" on the upper right chest can be seen upon close inspection or turning the jersey inside out. Fraying to the well-washed crest is also very noticeable along with the split neck done by a few players on the team. This is one of my top five favorite jerseys and I'm glad to have it back where I would be hard-pressed to ever get rid of it. The overall wear on the back is light in comparison to the front, but definitely not light! The white piping around the shoulders has some loose or removed threads making it not attached fully. There is no nameplate and the letters are sewn directly to the jersey (I love this). There is fraying to the numbers and letters. Three great repairs are located on the third of the jersey (two on the lower hem in the white and one in the green stripe). Lastly a great paint transfer can be seen on the lower left corner with red dasher paint in two spots where Kirk most likely rubbed against it.

1995-1996 TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS WHITE HOME SET
GAME USE & ABUSE: For a jersey this one has it all. The left arm has about 12+ stick marks all over it, a repair and just a plethora of blood stains. Blood where the sleeve attaches to the shoulder and at the elbow. Over on the right arm, 20+ stick marks grace the arm along with a repair (between the numbers) speckles of blood, and a board burn or two. The front side has 40+ marks of varying sizes and thicknesses across it. The blood motif continues with speckling across the shirt and up by the neck, around it, and otherwise everywhere. The back features one drop of blood in between the two lower blue stripes, and a dozen various marks running across it. Some light pulls and snags also put the icing and cherry on the cake with this great jersey.

NOTE: The blood may be from a fight featuring Muller going against a much younger Matthew Barnaby on the 10th of February 1996. I have not been able to confirm this, but I know Muller was bloodied in the fight with Barnaby. You Tube has a video of it.
I cannot confirm it due to set dates, but I think it is a safe bet that he scored a hat trick in this jersey versus Calgary on the 9th of March 1996. The last of his career. |
1996-1997 TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS WHITE HOME SET 1
GAME USE & ABUSE: Twenty seven stick marks line the left sleeve of this jersey along with two paint transfers and a pair of unrepaired holes. The right sleeve conversely shows off eighteen. Five board burns grace this arm along with seven unrepaired holes. In addition, three repairs are featured: One at the shoulder where the stitching meets and the Leaf patch is; another in the bottom blue stripe near the elbow; and the last one resides to the right of #21. The front features fourteen stick marks with the best two coming between the blue stripes as the belly. Two unrepaired holes finish out the wear on the front with one being a skate cut. Eight very light stick marks make an appearance on the back. One last unrepaired hole also shows up on the back near the right of the numbers. Light fraying finishes out the wear on the nameplate, letters, and numbers.

1999-2000 DALLAS STARS GREEN ROAD SET 1
GAME USE & ABUSE: Dallas jerseys and their sublimation really show off board burns quite well as they turn a white color and this jersey doesn't disappoint. I count nearly nine board burns on the left arm along with four stick marks you can see outside of the black area. The right arm has only eight board burns and a potential for number nine that turned into an unrepaired hole/skate cut below the numbers where you can also see two faint stick marks. On the front there are five assort stick marks usually in the gold/white striping of the star on each side along with a half-dozen board burns. When I got this great jersey Rob Robinson he told of me of a tri-color repair and I had never heard of such a thing. The repair is located to the left of the numbers along with two stick marks. A photo below features the wear.
